פרק 12: הקיקלופים השעה: חמש אחר הצהריים. המסבאה של בארני קירנאן. מאפיינים: צבע: ירוק. מדע/אמנות: כירורגיה איבר: שרירים. סמל: פניאנים הפרק מתמקד בראייה ועיוורון. הוא מסופר מנקודת מבטו של מספר אנונימי, יודע-כל ומרושע, שעיסוקו בגביית חובות, המתעב את בלום. הוא וחברו מגיעים לפאב, שם יושב לו אדם המכונה "האזרח", אירי לאומני ואנטישמי, שיושב בפאב לצד כלבו האימתני (דמותו מבוססת ככל הנראה על זו של מייקל קיוזק, מייסד הליגה האתלטית הגאלית, ארגון אירי לאומני). האזרח מייצג את פוליפמוס, הקיקלופ מהאודיסיאה. באודיסיאה מעוור אודיסאוס את עינו של פוליפמוס בעזרת מוט-ברזל מולבן, וכך מצליח להבריח את עצמו ואת אנשיו מתוך מערת הקיקלופ. בסופו של דבר מגלה אודיסאוס לקיקלופ את זהותו, והאחרון משליך על ספינתו סלע ענק שכמעט מנתץ אותה לרסיסים. בהמשך נכנס בלום, לפגישה שקבע עם ידידו מרטין קאנינגהאם, בעניין הביטוח של פאדי דיגנאם המת. כמו הקיקלופים, גם יושבי הבר עוינים, ובעיקר כלפי בלום, ובעיוורונם אינם שמים לב לאנושיותו של זה. עם הגעתו של קאנינגהאם מתחיל עימות מילולי בין בלום לבין "האזרח", אנטישמי מובהק, שמתבטא בחריפות נגד היהודים: "...הנה לך יהודי! הכל רק בשביל עצמו. ערמומי כמו עכברוש של בית שימוש. מאה לחמש." בתגובה להתבטאויותיו עונה בלוםו: "מנדלסון היה יהודי וקרל מרקס ומרקאדנטה ושפינוזה[29]. והמושיע היה יהודי ואביו היה יהודי, האלוהים שלהם...." האנטישמי שואל: - "האלוהים של מי?" - "טוב, אז הדוד שלו היה יהודי", עונה בלום, שפורמלית אינו יהודי בדתו: "אלוהים שלכם היה יהודי. ישו היה יהודי בדיוק כמוני." למשמע הדברים הללו מאיים האנטישמי לפצפץ את גולגולתו, ובלום נמלט מהמקום בכרכרה, באנלוגיה לאליהו הנביא, כל עוד נפשו בו.

Episode 12: The Cyclops Time: Five in the afternoon. Barney Kirnan's Pub. Characteristics: Color: Green. Science / Art: Surgery Organ: Muscles. Symbol: Panyans The chapter focuses on vision and blindness. It is told from the point of view of an anonymous, omniscient and vicious narrator, whose preoccupation with debt collection, who despises Bloom. He and his friend arrive at a pub, where he sits a man known as the "citizen", an Irish nationalist and anti-Semite, sitting in a pub next to his formidable dog (his figure is probably based on that of Michael Cusack, founder of the Gaelic Athletic League, an Irish nationalist organization). The citizen represents Polyphemus, the Cyclops from the Odyssey. In Odyssey, Odysseus blinds Polyphemus' eye with a bleached iron rod, and thus manages to escape himself and his men from the Cyclops Cave. Odysseus eventually reveals his identity to Cyclops, and the latter throws a huge rock at his ship that almost smashes it to pieces. Bloom later went into a meeting he had arranged with his friend Martin Cunningham, regarding the insurance of the dead Paddy Dignam. Like the Cyclops, the bar dwellers are hostile, especially to Bloom, and in their blindness do not pay attention to each other's humanity. With the arrival of Cunningham, a verbal confrontation begins between Bloom and the "citizen", a distinctly anti-Semitic one, which is sharply expressed against the Jews: "... here you have a Jew! Everything just for himself. Cunning as a rat of a toilet. One hundred to five." In response to his remarks, Bloom replies: "Mendelssohn was a Jew and Karl Marx and Marcadante and Spinoza [29]. And the Savior was a Jew and his father was a Jew, their God ...." The antisemitic asks: - "Whose God?" "Well, then his uncle was a Jew," replies Bloom, who is not formally a Jew in his religion: "Your God was a Jew. Jesus was a Jew just like me." At these words the antisemitic threatens to crack his skull, and Bloom flees the scene in a carriage, in analogy to the prophet Elijah, as long as his soul is in him. This chapter is narrated by an unnamed denizen of Dublin. The narrator goes to Barney Kiernan's pub where he meets a character referred to only as "The Citizen". There is a belief that this character is a satirization of Michael Cusack, a founder member of the Gaelic Athletic Association.[21] When Leopold Bloom enters the pub, he is berated by the Citizen, who is a fierce Fenian and anti-Semite. The episode ends with Bloom reminding the Citizen that his Saviour was a Jew. As Bloom leaves the pub, the Citizen, in anger, throws a biscuit tin at Bloom's head, but misses. The chapter is marked by extended tangents made in voices other than that of the unnamed narrator: these include streams of legal jargon, Biblical passages, and elements of Irish mythology.
